Something to see & do at every corner

With Paika Lake, the wetlands and stunning birdlife at your accommodation doorstep, the beautiful gardens of Paika Homestead only meters away, historical buildings and curiosities on the grounds, tours to Mungo and Yanga National Parks available, and the town of Balranald only 20 minutes away, there is no shortage of wonderful activities to occupy you should you wish to.  But if all you want is to just chill with a good book on the shores of the beautiful Lake watching the array of birds and wildlife go by, then Paika is the place for you.

Paika Lake & Wetlands

The Lake and wetlands offers a number of lakeside activities for your leisure:​
  • Hire a kayak and row on and around the lake (kayak is available on request)
  • Row to and stop for a picnic on one of the sandy beaches - why not order one of our picnic hampers!
  • Make sure you always have you binoculars handy so you can have a close up view of the many stunning water birds around the lake and in the area
  • Take a lovely walk around the lake which a favourite activity with our guest
  • Fish or yabby on the Lake (fishing rods, tackle & yabby nets are available free of charge, BYO bait)
  • Take a refreshing swim in the Lake
  • Relax lakeside with a good book and binoculars (and maybe with one of our yummy hampers).
  • In the evenings, sit on the veranda and admire the array of stunning colours of the magical sunsets over the Lake

The Paika Homestead & Gardens

Only meters from your accommodation is the Paika Homestead and charming gardens
  • Paika homestead was constructed in 1875 from locally-fired bricks, at a cost of £8 000.
  • The historic homestead has been lovingly restored and maintained over the past years.
  • Dianne and Iain welcome guests to stroll the gardens and take in all the charm of this garden... there's so much to see.  Beautiful flowers, kitchen garden, fruit trees, ornaments, and quiet nooks where you can sit and reflect for awhile.  You will soon see why the Paika gardens and the Paika grounds is a favourite location for weddings.

Balranald & Surrounds

Balranald & Surrounds

Balranald is a gem on the banks of the Murrumbidgee with lots of surprises!
  • Visit the Interpretative Pavilion, The Museum, The Old Gaol, the Wintong School and the Skate Park all at the Discovery Centre

  • Delicious homemade food is available at the Discovery Centre Café.  Whilst you enjoy a break in the café, your children will love the skate park and the fenced playground.

  • Try Balranald’s “Free Bike Hire” and cycle around the town

  • See Aboriginal Art and Craft at the Discovery Centre and The Gallery

  • Visit the Art Gallery with its many exhibitions

  • Walk the Heritage and Military Trails and venture across the Swing Bridge

  • Visit the Royal Theatre and take note of the beautiful stained glass

  • Birdwatching enthusiasts can walk the Ben Scott Memorial Bird Trail (seasonal)

  • Take an Outback Geo Adventure’s tour to Yanga and Mungo 

  • Visit the Friends of the Southern Cross Museum where replica Southern Cross planes are housed

  • Of course, Balranald also offers wonderful parks with playground equipment for those travelling with children, or the young at heart. A swimming pool in the heart of town is the ideal spot to cool off in the warmer months

Just a few more ideas!
  • Take a 5 minute drive north of Paika and have a cold drink, meal and have a chat with the locals at the iconic Homebush Hotel 
  • Cycle around the grounds and area 
  • We provide board games, playing cards and magazines if you want to relax in the comfortable lounge and dining area and in the colder months we provide wood for the open fire.
  • And when the sun goes down and its a little cool why not get a roaring fire going in the outside fire pit and relax with one of our dinner hampers with a cold beer or wine. (BYO wood)
